CITY COUNCIL AWARDS FIRE STATION CONSTRUCTION BID During regular session of city council, Pack's Inc. of Morehead was awarded the bid for construction of the new fire station for the Grayson Fire Department. Pack's was 1 of 2 contractors recommended by the city's architectural and engineering firm retained a year and a half ago to start plans for the new facility. Recommendations were based on price and ability to complete a project of the magnitude planned for the city. The current fire station, located at 301 E. Third Street was constructed around 1970 and has been outgrown by the needs of the fire department since the 1980's, requiring the department to store some vehicles outside due to a lack of space. Approximately 1/4 of the funding for the new station, to be located at 310 E. Third Street, just down the street from the current location, is being provided from state funding secured by Senator Charlie Borders. Posted on: January 14, 2009 |

Fire prevention week 2009 — “Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned”
Fire prevention week this year was from October 4-10. The Grayson Fire Department went to local area elementary schools and talked to around 200 children during the course of the week. The children were taught not go to go back into a burning house, how to “Stop, Drop, and Roll”, and various other fire prevention ideas that they could discuss with their parents. Just remember, Fire Prevention Week is not just for kids, it is for adults as well. Parents, please talk with your children about the importance of fire safety around the house. And if you need any information about fire safety, feel free to look at our “Public Education” page on this website, or email us at: graysonfire@gmail.com.

Fatality Vehicle Accident on I-64
Driving eastbound Sunday afternoon, Angela Acosta of Lexington lost control of her Chevrolet Blazer rolling over several times and coming to rest on its top in the westbound lane of I-64 at the 170mm. Ronnie Wallace, Carter Co. Deputy Coroner, pronounced Mrs. Acosta dead at the scene. However the story doesn’t end there. The story began earlier that afternoon when EMS personnel responded to the scene - Amanda Sturgill and Ben Justice, Paramedics, with Michelle Metzer and Breanna Furst, EMT’s. Using their medical skills they began working on Jason, age 5, and Cameron age 10, who both had to be airlifted by Health Net and Air Methods to Cabell Huntington Hospital. The Grayson Fire Department assisted EMS with medical support, took information, extricated Mrs. Acosta from the car, neutralized the hazards and washed down the highway while the Grahn Fire Department gave their support and assistance wherever needed. The Kentucky State Police investigated the accident, met Mr. Acosta, who flew in from Lexington to Tri-State Airport, and transported him to the hospital to be with his sons. Then there was Millis Wolfe, who removed the vehicle from the highway. Sure there were several motorists, who were inconvenienced and irate that the interstate was closed fro over three hours, but there were those motorists who offered assistance, gave out water, and felt sympathy for all those responders doing their job. It wasn’t and easy job to do, but then, that is what emergency first responders do. Working as a team, they used their skills and talents to assist one another. Two little boys lost their mother that day, and the emergency responders when home knowing that they did their best. So the next time, one hears a siren and sees flashing red lights, be thankful that there are those men and women out there willing to dedicate themselves to helping others in a time of need.

Vehicle Backs into Building
The Grayson Fire Department responded to the intersection of Robert & Mary Ave. and 2nd Street in response to a gas leak. When the Engine crew arrived on scene they found that a vehicle had backed into a natural gas meter on the outside of an apartment building, and then continued to back into a building where it came to rest. The gas meter was broken off the supply line going to a building thus causing natural gas to leak out. The engine crew was able to safely shut off the flow of gas. Utilities came and locked out the valve so it could not be turned back on until the meter had been fixed. The occupants of the building were evacuated for safety reasons until the gas had been shut off. Luckily, no one was injured during this accident. The Grayson Police Department investigated the accident and Wolfe’s Wrecker Service safely removed the vehicle from the building.
